The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District in cooperation with the Washington State Department Fish and Wildlife, Yakama Nation, and others are in the process of finalizing the plans for removal of an earthen causeway between Bateman Island and the shoreline in the City of Richland. The causeway is approximately 550 feet-long and 40-feet-wide and blocks flow along the southern side of the Yakima Delta. The causeway was built around 1940, prior to the construction of McNary Dam downstream in the Columbia River. Since construction of the causeway the, southern side of the Yakima Delta has become a backwater that supports non-native and native predatory fish and invasive plants. It also has increased stream temperature and created stagnant backwater conditions that contribute to agal blooms and unsafe water conditions.

Overview

The Yakima delta and confluence is a critical link to the entire Yakima River both historically and today. The Yakima River enters into the Columbia River at river mile 335 at the Tri-Cities in Washington State.

Yakima River Delta/Bateman Island Project
